Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201115391
Event: 12/24/2002
Employee injured when struck by equipment part

At approximately 2:40 a.m. on December 24, 2002, Employee #1, a cotton gin mechanic, was working at a cotton gin. He needed to replace a 480-pound packing roll at Gin Number 24. After removing the worn out roll, he moved the new roll into place using a roll cart. He then kneeled behind the gin stand to position the packing roll and to avoid hitting the trash duct on the gin. As he pulled the roll cart towards the gin, one end of the roll fell off the cart. The shaft of the roll sat approximately 13-in. out of the gin and struck him in the right upper leg, fracturing his femur. Emergency medical personnel were summoned. They arrived and transported him to a medical center. He was hospitalized for injuries to his leg.
