Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201160579
Event: 02/19/1998
EMPLOYEE'S FINGERS CRUSHED BY LIFT GATE

A mechanic for an electric utility was raising a truck-mounted powered lift gate. When the gate was raised, the horizontal gap between the lift gate and the truck bed decreased from 127 to 2 millimeters. The employee had his right hand on control lever for the lift gate. The control was located to the rear on the right side of the truck. The employee rested his left hand on the truck bed with the fingers of his left hand in the gap between the lift gate and the bed. While raising the lift gate, he was watching two coworkers to ensure that they were clear. When the mechanic heard his bones crunch, he let go of the control lever and then pushed it the wrong way, causing further injury. He suffered lacerations on the middle and index fingers of his left hand, a fracture of the middle finger on his left hand, and damaged nerves and tendons.
