Employee Sustains Amputation While Using Poly Clip Machine

At approximately at 9:00 p.m., May 9, 2001, a employee was working in the sausage department of a meat packing plant. The employee was operating a poly clip machine. After placing a casing onto a filler bar, the poly clip suddenly moved forward. As the employee placed his left hand on the end of the casing, the poly clip closed on his fingers. The employee sustained a proximal phalanx amputation of the left second and fifth fingers, a fracture of his fourth finger, and a laceration on his third finger. The employee was taken to US Health works where doctor stabilized him, and was later transferred to USC Medical Center where surgery was performed.
