Event: 08/23/2001
Employee's hand crushed by printing press roller

At approximately 12:50 p.m. on August 23, 2001, Employee #1 of Los Angeles Times started a press that was running 5200 papers per hour. Employee #1 noticed that the papers were not lined up straight. So, he entered the machine from the side door. He then stood up on the paper delivery conveyor with the machine running. Using his left hand to align the paper, he tapped the paper with his left hand in the open position. He lost his balance and slipped. His left hand went between the rollers. Employee #1 stopped the press using his right hand and kicked the doors open and yelled for help. A coworker was working on the second counsel and heard him went for help. Employee #1 was hospitalized with fractures and the amputation of fingers on his left hand.
