Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201161569
Event: 11/15/1999
Employee injured when crane overturns

On November 15, 1999, Employee #1 was operating a mobile crane with a 32 ft to 80 ft boom. After moving a part of a pile driver, he lifted a steel lattice pile driver with a height of 35 ft and weight of 3,800 lb and in an upright position parallel to the boom. He then drove the crane to a sloped area in the roadway. As he traveled across the sloped area, the loaded boom started to tilt left, then the wheels of the crane lifted from the ground and the crane tipped over crushing the cab into a wall. According to an eyewitness, the crane's right wheels ran over a pile of lumber causing the crane to tip over. The impact of the crane's cab upon the concrete wall resulted in the occupant receiving pelvis fractures. Emergency medical services were summoned and the employee was airlifted to a hospital where he was hospitalized.
