Employee Amputates Finger Using Honing Tool

At 5:00 p.m. on May 23, 2003. Employee #1, a machine operator and set-up man, set up the honing of a new part of the turbo housing center. He was using Sunnen Modular Honing System (Model Number MHS-840, Serial Number 1025). He finished two pieces and inspected them. He noticed stains on them. He wore gloves (Ansell Edmont, Sol-Vex, 37-165, size 10). He started to clean the honing tool using the pushing, a diamond dust-coated tool, while the machine was still running. Employee #1 was cleaning the tool with his left hand, while holding the trigger with his right hand. While cleaning, his left hand became caught between the pushing and the honing tool, causing his finger to be amputated. He was transported to a local hospital to treat his amputated finger.
