Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170895866
Event: 04/24/2001
Employee Injured When Arm Pulled Into Packaging Machine

Employee #1 worked as a "backstand" or machine operator assistant for a company that manufactures absorptive plastic-lined paper pads marketed to accompany meat product packaging for retail meat product sales. During a normal machine run, a piece of plastic became stuck at a point of operation of the machine that puts perforations in the pads to aid in the absorptive capabilities of the pad by way of a rotating pinwheel. Employee #1 attempted to remove the plastic piece while the machine was in operation and his right hand and arm were pulled into the machine causing a crushing injury to his right hand and wrist. The machine had no guard at the time of the accident. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
