Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201066339
Event: 03/07/2003
Employee injured while installing feeder lines

At approximately 3:15 p.m. on March 7, 2003, Employee #1, a worker for an electrical contractor, and six coworkers, were located on the second floor of a building to install feeder lines. Two of the workers were assigned to feed a cable wire and rope through a long 2-inch diameter conduit pipe to the feeder of an electrical box opening. The remainder of the workers and Employee #1 were pulling the wire towards the inside opening of the feeder, using a tug-of-war technique. Most of the rope had reached the feeder when, for some reason, the tie wire (attachment between the cable wire and the rope) broke inside the conduit pipe. This caused the rope to loosen, providing slack in the line. One of the coworkers slipped and fell backwards, causing Employee #1 to fall and hit a wall. Employee #1 was hospitalized at Mercy Hillcrest Hospital and treated for his injuries, which included multiple fractures to the femur and pelvic region on his right side. He underwent surgery and was released 5 days later.
