Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201052610
Event: 07/12/1999
Employee injured when finger amputated while cutting panel

Employee #1 was a heavy-equipment repairing technician. He had 20 years of experience in repairing different kinds of heavy machinery. On July 12, 1999, he was repairing the deteriorated steel wall of a rotary blaster. At approximately 11:00 a.m., Employee #1 cut a 40-inch by 80-inch steel panel using a plasma cutting torch. After Employee #1 cut the steel panel, he noticed two other employees standing away from the blaster. Employee #1 used a slash hammer with his right hand to knock down this steel panel. Unexpectedly, when the panel was knocked down, Employee #1's left hand was in the dropping direction of this steel panel. The sharp edge of this steel panel cut through Employee #1's leather welding glove, and lacerated his middle finger tip. After the accident had occurred, one of his coworkers took him to the Marshak Medical Center, where he received medical treatment. Employee #1 came back to work the next morning, having not suffered a serious injury after the accident. The skin of Employee #1's fingertip was lacerated, but there was no bone lost on his finger. Employee #1 did not stay in the hospital over 24 hours.
