Burns Body While Pouring Sodium Hydrosulfite Into A Tank

On April 30, 1999, Employee #1 burned his right arm, chest, right leg, left hand, left leg, and face while pouring sodium hydrosulfite into a mixing tank. As he was pouring sodium hydrosulfite into the mixing tank, the hot chemical solution burst out and splashed onto him. He was not wearing any protective clothing or equipment or using any shields, screens, or enclosures to keep the chemicals inside the tank. He suffered third degree burns to his right arm, chest, right leg and second degree burns to part of his left hand, left leg, and face. His employer failed to provide adequate shields, screens or enclosures on the mixer and failed to provide proper personal protective equipment and clothing to Employee #1. Employee #1 went to a local hospital for treatments for the burns.
