Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201165206
Event: 07/14/2003
Employee receives laceration to the neck with saw

On July 14, 2003, an employee of Rogers Plumbing was in a 7.5-ft deep portion of an unshored trench cutting a black iron fire main with a multipurpose, gas powered 12-in. diameter abrasive saw. The guard was in place on the saw. As he was working, the saw bound and bucked up. The handles of the saw broke, allowing it to turn in on the employee's hands. The blade struck his chest and neck cutting him from the right clavicle, to just below the Adam's apple. The cut went through his jugular vein and just missed his aorta. He was hospitalized for about a week.
