Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201160827
Event: 01/21/1999
Employee injures his leg from a loaded gun in a box

On January 21, 1999, Employee #1 (a policeman and swat team member) was placing a box with a loaded gun into a car when it discharged hitting the officer in the leg. The gun involved was a Glock, Caliber 40 S&W. The safety on a Glock is in the center of the trigger, so that when anything is touching the trigger the safety is off. The factory box has two parts, an upper and lower section. In the bottom portion, a round post protruding upwards that is intended to prevent movement of the gun. When the gun is in the box, the post contacts the trigger, thereby disabling the safety. Therefore, if the gun is loaded and the box is vigorously moved, then the gun may accidentally discharge. There are warning labels on the box, and the owner's manual also warns against putting loaded guns in the box. Employee #1 received lacerations to his leg and was hospitalized.
