Employee Sustains Fracture When Struck by Forklift

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on October 19, 2003, Employee #1, a clerk, was working the weight on a large crate of almonds. The forklift driver had just located the box on the scale, and had backed up, seven feet from the scale. The driver placed the machine in neutral and got off the forklift. The driver's hip or jacket hit the gear shift and the forklift went into gear. Even though the emergency brake was on, the forklift moved forward. The lowered forks hit Employee #1 in the left leg, and pushed her into the large almond box, weighing 2,500 lbs. Emergency personnel were called, and Employee #1 was air-lifted to Kern Medical Center, where she was admitted for treatment.
