Employee's Foot Caught In Locking Device, Amputating Her Toe

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on August 13, 2001, Employee #1 and another ramp employee were loading a container into an aircraft. The container weighed 3,680 pounds. While pulling the container, Employee #1's left foot became caught on one of the locking devices installed on the floor of the aircraft. At the same time, the container hit the back of her heel, pinning her left heel between the container and the locking device. As a result, she had multiple fractures on her left foot and a laceration on her toes. Her fifth toe had to be amputated. Two surgeries were performed on her left foot, and she was hospitalized for 5 days at Chino Valley Hospital.
