Employee Sustains Partial Amputation of Ring Finger

At 11:50 a.m. on February 18, 2005, Employee #1, a leadman employed by Do+Able Products Inc., in Chino, CA, was operating an edge bander (Homag, unit #3, Optimat, SE9300, 0200083625), when he observed that the top edge of the band on a workpiece was wavy as a result of glue deposits on the top copy wheel of the fine trimming unit. He decided to clean the copy wheel and lifted the machine's hood, waited a few seconds, and proceeded to clean the top horizontal copy wheel. He held the wheel with his left hand as he was scrapping the glue off the wheel with his right hand, using a small piece of plastic banding. With his left hand still on the wheel, he turned the wheel counter-clockwise and his left ring finger contacted the cutting tool, causing a partial amputation. He was transported to U S Health Works, then to Chino Valley Medical Center in Chino, where he was hospitalized for his injury.
