Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201154564
Event: 01/25/2001
Employee's Finger Amputated When Saw Catches Glove

At approximately 9:00 p.m. on January 25, 2001, Employee #1 amputated his middle finger while operating a saw to cut a piece of metal. His employer notified the Division on February 1, 2001. Employee #1 was using a metal cutting saw. The Model Number was NF-1214 T10. The piece of metal was measured at 6 feet by 3 feet by 2 inches. After trimming the sides of the piece, he was ready to make a first cut. He set the back gauge in forward motion. He pressed on the material to keep the material snug with the back gauge. As the material was moving forward, the glove on Employee #1's left hand became caught between the moving part (material) and a groove (about 3 inches long, 2.5 inches wide, and 2 inches deep) on the table of the saw. He pulled his middle finger in to the pinch point. His middle finger then became amputated. After the incident, Employee #1 was taken to Kaiser Permanente Hospital by another employee.
