Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201039468
Event: 06/15/2007
Employee Amputates Finger While Operating Machine

On June 15, 2007, an employee was cutting the tube on the roller machine. The machine was made by the Continental Company. The Model and Serial Numbers of the machine were 3A and 3855, respectively. As the tube was being cut, it spanned back and got between the bottom support rolls and the machine blade, forcing the piece to screw towards the machine control panel. The employee had the habit to support his weight by holding his left hand against the control panel for balance to offset minor disability in his right leg. When he saw the tube spinning towards the control panel, his natural reaction was to grab the tube, causing the pipe to crush his finger, resulting in an amputation of left index finger. The employee was taken to the Western Hand Center, Downey, where he was treated for a finger amputation.
