Investigation Summary
At approximately 8:00 a.m. on September 11, 2003, Employee #1 was performing rip cutting of fire blocks at the east entrance to the new residential home construction at the Lot Number 62. Employee #1 was holding a short piece of fire block against the ground with his left hand and was holding a Skilsaw, Model HDM77M, Serial Number HG436807, extension cord and a 16-in. piece of wood 2-in by 4-in fire block stud C.R, with his right hand. As he was making the rip cut on the fire block, the piece of wood was vibrating, which caused the Skilsaw to bounce backward and completely amputate Employee #1's left thumb. The manager, in the vicinity of the construction site at the time of the accident, transported Employee #1 to Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Brawley. Apparently, there were no hand surgeons at the Pioneer Memorial to do a thumb reattachment, so Employee #1 was taken by air flight to the Sharp Hospital in San Diego. The hand surgeon was able to reattach the left thumb for Employee #1. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
