Employee Amputates Finger in Jointer

At approximately 5:30 a.m. on September 18, 2009, an employee, a carpenter, was pushing a piece of wood, 4-in. by 0.25-in. by 10-ft, through the jointer to make a clean edge. While he was pushing the 0.25-in. thick board onto the jointer blade, suddenly something, like a knot, struck against the running blade causing the board to jump. The employee's left fingers contacted the running blade resulting in an amputation of his left ring finger up to the second knuckle and deep lacerations to his left middle finger. The employee was hospitalized and treated for an amputation.
