Employee's Fingers Are Amputated by Router

At 9:00 a.m. on December 19, 2007, Employee #1 was operating an SR1 shaper router machine that was under development. He had been adjusting the machine to trim and finish a continuous plastic extrusion to specific dimensions. Employee #1 removed a clear plastic guard and reached with his left hand into the machine to clean away plastic shavings. His hand contacted the two 4.5-in.-diameter shaper blades that were still spinning at 5,000 RPM. Employee #1 was hospitalized at Kaiser Permanente, where his left thumb and index finger were amputated.
