Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201146008
Event: 08/05/2004
Employee is injured when foot crushed by garbage truck

At approximately 7:30 a.m. on August 5, 2004, Employees #1, a garbage collector for a solid waste management company, and a coworker were making their scheduled rounds retrieving refuse from designated areas; The coworker was operating the garbage truck while Employee #1 retrieved the garbage, which usually consisted of, but was not limited to, non-regulated waste and recycled products from private and public locations. As the front-loading collection vehicle approached the first stop, Employee #1, a full time employee, exited the vehicle from the passenger side before the vehicle came to a complete stop and stood in close proximity to the vehicle. The truck's passenger side front tires rolled over Employee #1's right foot. The coworker stopped the vehicle, backed up, and assisted Employee #1. Emergency services were contacted by the facility's security personnel and Employee #1 was transported to Placentia Linda Hospital, where he was hospitalized and treated for multiple fractures to his right foot.
