Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201145430
Event: 06/01/2004
Employee injured while operating skill-saw

At approximately 8:42 a.m. on June 1, 2004, Employee #1, a permanent employee of a company that specializes in the construction of sporting fields, was replacing the grass soccer field, at a college, with a synthetic field and creating a grass practice field next to it. Employee #1 was using an electric hand-held skill-saw, Model Number HD77m, to cut a piece of wood that measured 2 feet long, 3 or 4 inches wide, and 1 inch thick to make a grading stick. As Employee #1 held the piece of wood with his left hand and operated the saw with his right hand, the blade of the saw jammed. Employee #1 pulled back on the saw and the blade came into contact with his left hand. Employee #1 was hospitalized, where he was treated for a laceration between his thumb and index finger. The injury required surgery to repair the extensor tendons and radial nerve. An investigation revealed that the guard on the saw was in a pinned back position at the time of the accident.
