Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202445037
Event: 09/26/2006
Employee's Hand Is Crushed When Trailer Hitch Shifts

At approximately 2:00 a.m. on September 26, 2006, Employee #1 was working as a truck driver for a trucking company engaged in moving freight within the state of California and nationwide. He was a regular employee. He parked a truck coupled with a set of 28-foot long trailers so that he could disconnect, manually, the rear trailer with his gloved hands. As soon as he unlatched the dolly/gear tongue of the rear trailer, it jumped upward, smashing his right hand between the dolly tongue and the horizontal bar of the hooking assembly at the back of the front trailer. Employee #1 sustained a crushing injury of his right hand. Initially, he was taken to the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, in Colton, CA, for treatment. He was transferred to Kaiser Permanente, in Riverside, CA, for additional treatment. He was hospitalized for four days. Later on, surgery was performed at the Outpatient Surgery Center, in Santa Ana, CA. After an investigation, no violation of T8CCR was found. No accident-related citation was issued.
