Employee's Hand Amputated When Cleaning Tortilla Machine

At approximately 8:30 p.m. on January 13, 2005, Employee #1, a tortilla clerk, was cleaning a masa feeder, hopper, which contained a pair of screw augers at the bottom. The two screw augers rotate in the inward direction creating a pinch point. The masa feeder, Model Number HDMF-5, Serial Number 1004314, was located in the tortilla and chips production department. Employee #1 poured water into the hopper with a bucket and reached into the screw augers to clean them. For unknown reason she turned the power on and her right hand was caught in the rotating augers and amputated. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
