Investigation Summary
At approximately 9:00 a.m. on December 22, 2003, an employee was using the table saw, a Ryobi model BTS-10, to cut wood siding shingles that were to be nailed onto the side of a garage. The table saw provided by the employer did not have a guard over the blade at the time of the accident. The employee did not use a push stick, and was not trained or qualified on the use of the table saw. The blade of the saw was adjusted far above the height of the material being cut. In the process of cutting the shingles, the employee's right hand passed over the exposed blade, cutting off his four fingers and a thumb of right hand. The employee was transported to UCSD Hospital where he was hospitalized and treated for amputation of finger and laceration of hand.
