Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202532149
Event: 08/12/2013
Employee's Hand Is Crushed by Press

At approximately 10:45 a.m. on August 12, 2013, an employee was using a metal plate tool to press the pie filling into the pie crust manually in front the automatic crust pie cutter. He was operated at the speed of 95 pies per minute. The crust pie cutter-crimber was about 30.7 lbs, 8-in. high and 10-in. diameter. The crimber functions as a punch press and created cutting, pressing, and crushing hazards. After working many hours with the metal plate tool, the employee's right hand got tired so he switched the tool the left hand. While switching the tool from right hand to left hand, the tool slipped off from his hand and went into the point of operation. He put his hand into the point of operation through and under the point of operation guard to retrieve the tool. His right hand was crushed when the crimber came down. He was taken to the UCLA General Hospital and was hospitalized for 2 days. He suffered deep laceration to his right hand from palm to middle finger, which required a surgery later.
