Employee amputates finger while using electric saw

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on March 23, 2004, an employee was cutting multiple pieces of a long white spring rod PVC pipe on a Makita 10-in. Miter saw, Model Number LS1030N with a metal carbide blade. The employee #1 was wearing light weight and tight fitting gloves while making cuts to the PVC pipe. He made a cut, released the trigger to shut off the power, and assumed that the guard was fully lowered over the blade when the blade caught his hand and cut his left index finger. The employee was transported to the Grossmont Hospital by his supervisor. The employee was seen in the emergency room where they tried to save his finger but was unsuccessful. The employee's left index finger was amputated down to the second joint.
