Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170813646
Event: 09/21/1995
Two employees injured from exposure to metal cleaner

On September 21, 1995, Employees #1 and #2, both age 18, were working in the car wash behind a Shell service station. The manager sprayed Zep-a-Lume, a highly corrosive metal cleaner, on the inside of the station's car wash to clean the parts and equipment, and then directed Employees #1 and #2 to wash off the cleaner with water. As they were working, the acid mist started burning their skin and making them sick. Both suffered slight skin burns and some burning of the upper respiratory system. They were treated by the fire department and then taken to Roseville Hospital, where they were checked and released. Employees #1 and #2 had been told to clean up corrosive cleaner without being given any personal protective equipment except gloves, and they were not provided any information or training on the chemical. There was no appropriate first aid equipment, such as a eye wash or shower, on site.
