Employee's eye lacerated when steel strap snaps

Employee #1, a carpenter, was using a claw hammer to break the steel banding around a load of plywood. He started to staple the plywood in place when the steel band snapped and struck him in the face, lacerating his left eye. Quick treatment in the hospital saved Employee #1's eye, and he subsequently had a cornea transplant that restored partial vision in the eye. Employee #1 had his safety glasses in his pocket and had intended to put them on, but started working before he did so.
