Event: 05/17/1998
Employee injures abdomen when backhoe stops suddenly

At approximately 3:00 p.m. on May 17, 1998, Employee #1, a farm laborer, was driving a loader/backhoe along a dirt road on a levee. He reached for the hand throttle but mistakenly pushed the loader bucket control leveler, causing the bucket to drop onto the road and instantly stop the machine. Employee #1 did not immediately report the accident but was transported to Sutter Hospital later in the day as pain in his abdomen increased. He sustained minor internal bleeding and was released from the hospital the following day. Employee #1's injuries were believed to have been caused by his impact against the steering wheel and possibly by his seatbelt.
