Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201179157
Event: 11/26/2005
Employee Fractures Leg While Repairing Delimber

On November 26, 2005, Employee #1, a mechanic, was working for a logging contractor making repairs to a delimber. The delimber cuts the limbs from the logs. Employee #1 used a chain to support the delimber head so it could not fall during repair work. He climbed on the boom of the delimber to place the chain and walked to the end of the boom, which was supported by the blade of a skidder. He used the blade to elevate the delimber head and hold it during repair. The employee jumped to the skidder blade instead stepping down on to it. The motion of his jump caused the blade to move enough to allow his leg to be caught between the blade and delimber head. Employee #1's left femur was fractured, and he was hospitalized.
