Investigation Summary
On September 19, 2005, Employee #1, a logging contractor, was working for the company as a landing man. His job was to cut knots (knot bumper) from logs brought to the landing. A choker was used to carry logs to the landing. After he released the chokers from the logs, the logs dropped in the landing area and he picked up his saw to remove the knots. He traveled behind a yarder to remove the knots on the other side of a log. As he did so, the yarder turned to send the carriage back down the hill. Employee #1 was caught between the yarder frame and a stump, sustaining injuries to his hip and pelvis. He was transported to a hospital for medical attention and was hospitalized for fractures to his hip. Employee #1 was aware that crossing behind the yarder was not an acceptable work practice.
