Employee's Hand Fractured in Nip Point of Machine

On January 20, 2006, Employee #1, working as a finger joint crew member, was working on a finger joint machine. The machine had a jam on the out-feed side of the carriage saw. Employee #1 went to the carriage side which was jammed in the open position. He reached between the carriage slide and the metal frame of the carriage saw to remove a piece of wood. A coworker started the machine not realizing Employee #1 was reaching in it. The machine started and Employee #1's left hand was crushed as the slide closed. He was hospitalized.
