Investigation Summary
On October 18, 2007, Employee #1, a logger, walked over to an area, which was next to a skidder, to cut down a dead tree. The tree was 5-6 ft away from the trail/road. While Employee #1 was standing there, a skidder was going by with a load of limbs and logs. Employee #1 stepped back 9-10 ft from the trail, and 4-5 ft from the snag. When the skidder went by, one of the limbs caught a stump on the other side of the trail, and got stuck. That caused the load to pull to the opposite side of Employee #1. As the skidder kept moving, the limb broke free and snapped back. The load swung toward Employee #1 and a limb that came from the load on the skidder struck his knee. Employee #1 sustained fractured knee in two places and he was hospitalized for four days.
