Investigation Summary

Event: 01/19/2007
Employee's Finger Is Amputated During Truck Maintenance

On January 19, 2007, Employee #1, a mechanic, was checking the rear brake system for leaks. He was moving from the passenger side of the truck trailer to the driver side while lying on a creeper. He placed his hand on the brake pod to push himself to the other side of the trailer. His left middle finger entered an opening in the brake pod as he pushed to the other side. At the same time the brakes were actuated, so he could listen for any leaks. The tip of his left middle finger was crushed by the brake system as it closed and set the brakes. His finger was amputated to the first joint.
