Employee's finger injured when struck by falling robotic arm

At approximately 8:00 a.m. on March 4, 1998, Employee #1 and a coworker, the shop foreman, both of Schilling Robotic Systems, were using a 500 to 600 lb cherry picker to lift and assemble two sections of a robotics arm at the elbow joint. The coworker was being suspended in synthetic slings from the cherry picker while Employee #1 was aligning the sections of the robotic arm. The two sections were nearly in position when one of the slings slipped from the hook of the cherry picker. The end of one arm section dropped onto Employee #1's left hand, crushing and lacerating his index finger and amputating the tip. He was administered first aid and then transported by car to Woodland (CA) Memorial Hospital for treatment.
