Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170626618
Event: 08/13/2001
Employee Amputates Fingers Using Table Saw

At approximately 6:30 a.m. on August 13, 2001, Employee #1, a cabinet maker working for Sawyer's Cabinets in Chico, California, was using a table saw to cut narrow strips of lumber to construct cabinets. The table saw did not have any guards. Employee #1 was using a push stick with his right hand, pushing the strips through the saw. His left hand was holding the edge of the board, pushing it against the rip fence as it went through the saw. The outside edge of the board was leveled at 45 degrees, causing a hazardous situation. As Employee #1 pushed on the edge of the board, his left hand slipped and went up and over the edge of the board into the saw blade, amputating his fingers. First-aid was immediately given, and Employee #1 was taken to Enloe Hospital in Chico, California. He was then transferred by helicopter to Ralph K. Davies Hospital in San Francisco, California, where the fingers on his left hand were reattached.
