Employee's lower leg amputated when caught by an auger

Employee #1 is a pitman whose duties include loading trailers, cleaning bins and general labor was cleaning Bin Number 13. Bin Number 13 is approximately 12 ft in diameter and the floor slopes towards the center. A 12 inch auger runs under the center of the floor and is covered by a steel grate. Rice falls through the grate and is moved out of the auger. The grate prevents contact with the auger and is covered by wooden blocks, approximately 2-in. by 8-in. by 14-in. The blocks prevent the rice from entering the auger. A bearing hanger supports the auger and is covered by a steel plate approximately 6-in. by 14-in. When the steel plate is removed there is an area approximately 4 inch wide in which the auger can be contacted. Employee #1 was in the bin with a shovel and broom to move the remnants of rice into the auger. The drier operator was standing outside of the bin and Employee #1 handed the blocks and bearing cover plate to him. Employee #1 then stepped into the opening at the bearing hanger and his lower leg was amputated. He was hospitalized.
