Employee suffers amputated thumb

At about 3:50 p.m. on September 7, 2000, Employee #1 was seriously injured while working for a wood roof truss manufacturer. Employee #1 used a skilsaw to correct the angled cut of a roof truss member. The cut was a low angle diagonal across the 2 in. by 4 in. piece of lumber, when partially through, the saw bound and kicked back. As it came back down the board it ran across Employee #1's thumb, amputating it very quickly. The work was being done on a solid surface and the guard was in proper working order. Employee #1 was hospitalized for his injuries.
