EMPLOYEE KILLED IN FALL FROM TRAILER BIN

At 8:00 a.m. on September 24, 1997, a fatality occurred to an employee who had fallen from a trailer bin while working in a grape vineyard. Employee #1, along with three other employees, worked as a team to cut the grapes and put them in bins. There were four bins that fit in the trailer that was pulled by a Massey Ferguson Model 245 tractor. The trailer was a Jacobson, 16-feet in length, with a single set of tires approximately in the middle. The trailer was equipped with running boards that were 7.25-inches in width and that sit approximately 15-inches from the ground. The tractor driver was bringing the full load from the vineyard into the street to be dumped, traveling at approximately 5 miles per hour, with Employee #1 riding on the running board. Employee #1 fell onto the street pavement, sustaining fatal head and neck injuries.
