Investigation Summary
At approximately 8:50 a.m. on June 25, 2001, Employee # 1 of Roper Seed Co. was emptying a rice storage warehouse. At about 8:50 a.m., Employee # 1 felt that the rice was getting too hot and decided to turn on the air blowers. He went into the adjoining entry/parts storage room, where air blowers and controls are located and turned on the air blower. As he turned away from the control panel he tripped on something, probably the 15-hp drive motor for the air blower. As he fell his left hand came in contact with the three belts running between the motor and the air blower, and was pulled into the drive pulley on the motor amputating his thumb. The first aid was provided by the local fire department before being life-flighted to Enloe Hospital in Chico, Ca. He was treated and released that afternoon, following the amputation of his left thumb.
