Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170626519
Event: 12/23/2000
Employee injured from fall off of roof

At approximately 11:00 a.m. on December 23, 2000, Employee #1 and other employees were installing concrete roofing tiles. The installation of the roof took several days; they began with the placing of a baton and thermo ply base roof system. Next, they installed the new lightweight concrete roof tile roofing. After finishing the backside of the house in the morning and beginning the front, they started on an extended portion of the roof. Employee #1 had just begun the first row of tiling at the bottom edge when he slipped and fell 22-ft to the ground. As he fell, he collided with a support beam between the garage and entry porch about halfway down that reduced his rate of descent. While, this suppressed the force of his impact upon the ground, he still received fractures to the vertebrates of his neck in the fall. Emergency medical services were summoned and provided with out-of-hospital acute care. He was then transported to the emergency room and hospitalized over a period of time to obtain medical care. At the hospital, orthopedic surgeons repaired the fractures to his bones. He stayed in postoperative ward for further care and treatment.
