Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170626584
Event: 06/15/2000
Employee dies of apparent heat stroke

At approximately 2:00 p.m. on June 16, 2000, Employee #1, a 16-year-old laborer with Scharf Construction, collapsed on the roof of a single-story private residence in Sacramento, CA. He had been seen by the site supervisor five minutes or less before he was found. Employee was administered first aid and CPR on the roof where he collapsed until local paramedics arrived. Coworkers then helped the paramedics and the Sacramento Fire Department move him from the roof onto a gurney. Employee #1 was transported to Sutter General Hospital, where he received basic and advanced life support before being pronounced dead. He had only worked for several hours on June 15; he had been working since 8:00 a.m. on the day of the accident, but had taken frequent breaks for water and food in the available shade and he had hosed himself off with water. Employee #1 had not complained of feeling ill or dizzy, or of having a headache, before he collapsed. The Sacramento County Coroner's office performed an autopsy, but no cause of death was determined. No accident-related violations were found.
