Employee injured when caught by conveyor tail pulley

At 10:00 a.m. on March 1, 2002, Employee #1, a laborer with 2 months experience, was severely injured while performing clean up work at the Mountain Gate Quarry near Redding, California. Employee #1 was using a shovel to clean up spilled rock under the unguarded tail pulley on the 10-horsepower, 30-inch return conveyor belt when the equipment grabbed his shirt and pulled him into the tail pulley. He was able to pull back from the tail pulley and tear off his shirt, which freed him from the equipment. There was no guard on the tail pulley. The guard had been off for approximately 20 days. Employee #1 suffered cuts, scrapes, bruises and the removal of flesh from his left side and left arm and is expected to require rehabilitative surgery for his arm and side. Employee #1 was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Redding, California.
