Chain Sprocket Amputates Employee's Finger

At approximately 9:00 a.m. on January 26, 2004, Employee #1 was operating a "blow mold" machine baking plastic bottles. When the bottles come out of the mold they are trimmed and the trimming fall down onto a tray and are conveyed away. A piece of the trimming dropped down and became stuck on the tray and Employee #1 attempted to remove the piece of scrap without stopping the machine using the interlocked doors. Employee #1 went around to the back of the machine, crawled underneath a conveyor support frame and reached into the area of the drop tray. Employee #1's finger contacted the conveyor chain and sprocket drive. Employee #1 suffered the amputation of the tip of his right middle finger. Employee #1 was treated but was not hospitalized.
