Employee injured when head pinned against blower beam

Employee #1, a 20-year-old apprentice welder, was using a torch to cut a large blower secured to an I-beam. The blower was rigged and it was being held by a rental crane when it came loose and pinned Employee #1's head against the beam. He was hospitalized for two days for treatment of skull fractures, nerve damage, and facial scars. Employee #1 was wearing a welding helmet , which absorbed most of the blow. He did not react quickly enough to the beam's sudden shift because of the helmet's #5 shade lens.
