Investigation Summary
The employer is a logging contractor. Employee #1 works for the company as a hook tender. Employee #1's job is to lay out the lines for the yarder. Employee #1 was preparing to fall a tree to make a corridor for the next location of the yarder main line. Employee #1 cut a face into the tree when the wind blew it over backwards. Employee #1 ran to the side to be clear of the falling tree. Employee #1 turned and looked at the falling tree when a branch struck Employee #1 in his left eye. Employee #1 was not wearing eye protection, and he lost his left eye. He was hospitalized.
