Investigation Summary
Employee #1, a concrete subcontractor, was working as an hourly employee for another contractor who was doing the concrete foundation for a residence. Employee #1 was using his own Makita table saw, model 2708, serial #14676, to rip a 2 in. by 4 in. by 1 1/2 ft long piece of stock for a handle to make a bull float. He was pushing with his right hand and using his left hand to hold the stock against the fence. The stock kicked back and his left hand slid under the guard into the saw blade, amputating his left thumb and all but one tendon of his little finger. Employee #1 said the saw was equipped with a guard with spreader and anti-kick-back devices. The cause of the accident was failure to use a push stick and feather board.
