Employee amputates thumb on wood splitting machine

Employee #1, who worked as a yardman for a small paving and excavating contractor, was splitting wood with a hydraulic wood splitting machine. He had his right hand on the control valve that moved the splitting ram down, and his left hand on a piece of wood. Employee #1 looked up to see if a customer was arriving, just as the ram was going down. His left thumb was amputated by the splitting head as it was caught between the wood and ram head.
