Employee injures hand when glove catches on saw blade

At approximately 5:15 p.m. on January 9, 1996, Employee #1 was operating a chop saw when the saw blade guard and exhaust duct became dislodged. He turned off the saw through the electrical breaker switch and reached down to replace the guard. As he did so, he observed a stick blocking the guard and he reached down to grab it. The back of his gloved hand became caught on the saw blade, and the blade carried his hand around a half turn before stopping. He suffered a severe laceration across the back of his left hand, and several bones and tendons were severed. No one was close, so he ran to the supervisor's office and reported the accident. First aid was started prior to arrival of the fire department and ambulance. He was transported by ambulance to Auburn Faith Hospital, Auburn, CA, for treatment. At the time of the accident, the saw blade was running down after being turned off; the run-down time was clocked at 15 to 20 seconds.
